Name Forge

Eight names per batch, each with a flavour sentence. Click any name to copy it. Move on.

Good names are one of the small things that make solo RPG feel real. A merchant called “Merchant” is a placeholder. A merchant called Aldric Vane — “a name people say quietly, if they say it at all” — is a character.

Name Forge generates eight names per batch, each paired with a short flavour sentence that tells you who or what this name belongs to. Click any name to copy it instantly.

A real example

You’re playing a grimdark dungeon crawl and need a name for the ruin you’ve just found. You open Name Forge, select the Grimdark theme, switch type to Place, and add context:

Theme: Grimdark & Dark Fantasy — Type: Place Context you add

ancient tower ruin, cursed, no locals will go near it

Name Forge returns (8 names, here’s a selection)

The Spite Tower — “Built out of hatred, abandoned out of fear.”
Vethkar’s Hollow — “The name predates the records. No one knows who Vethkar was.”
The Grey Witness — “It has stood here longer than the kingdom. It will stand here after.”

Click The Spite Tower. Copied. Done. Back to playing.

The context field — pro tip

The context field is optional but it changes everything. A character name generated with no context is good. A character name generated with “a one-eyed fence operating out of a grimdark port city, morally flexible, used to be military” is a specific person.

The more specific your context, the better the names. Don’t just say “merchant” — say “merchant who specialises in stolen goods, nervous around authority, been in this city for five years and has an exit plan.”

Types available

Character names are free. For example, generate a villain name and the flavour sentence might hint at their reputation or history. Place, Tavern, Villain, Faction, Artefact, Ship, and Creature names unlock with Viking tier — each type generates names with the specific flavour and register that type needs.

Themes

Classic Fantasy and Grimdark & Dark Fantasy are free. Eight additional themes unlock with Viking — Old West, Sci-Fi & Space, Norse & Viking, Lovecraftian, Celtic & Folk, Oriental & Far East, Post Apocalyptic, Gothic Victorian, Pirate & Seafaring, Tribal & Primal. Each theme generates names that genuinely sound like they belong in that setting.
